The Bankhead Tunnel in Mobile reopened to traffic at 4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 24. The landmark tunnel was closed during the prior week for electrical and other systems upgrades. It was originally slated to reopen on Friday. Feb. 23, but unforeseen mechanical issues caused a delay.
Night closures planned
Night-time travelers can expect closures of the tunnel from 8 p.m. to 5 a.m. beginning Sunday, Feb. 25, and continuing through Thursday, Feb. 29. During these night closures, crews will be installing additional upgrades to lighting.
The Alabama Department of Transportation advises motorists planning to travel through the tunnel at these hours to take alternate routes, including the Wallace Tunnel or the Africatown Bridge. In addition, motorists can use the ALGO Traffic app for real-time traffic information.
