ALDOT announces the start of construction for the widening of US-31 in Baldwin County to add a center turn lane for motorists. The addition of a center turn lane in this segment of US-31 will improve traffic flow and safety by providing a dedicated lane for vehicles turning into businesses or side streets along the highway.

Construction is scheduled to begin Monday, June 3, 2024, and will primarily take place during daytime hours. With schools no longer in session, traffic disruptions are expected to be minimal. Motorists should be prepared for a detour and lane shifts as work progresses.

Detours

During lane closures, northbound US-31 traffic will be directed to use Old Highway 31 as a detour route to bypass the construction area. The re-routing of northbound US-31 traffic is expected to last a couple of weeks until widening efforts are completed.

Southbound traffic will continue to use US-31 during construction.

This project will complete the gap in the existing three-lane configuration along US-31 from the junction of Old Highway 31 to 0.265 miles east of the junction of Coleman Lane. Once completed, drivers will have a full 3-lane segment for nearly two miles from the Shambo Road/Stroh Road intersection to Eastern Shore Boulevard that will improve the traffic flow for the nearly 18,000 vehicles per day that travel the route. The project is being funded by federal safety funds and state match.
