Kevin Long either has it or knows where to get it.
The Alabama Department of Transportation Tuscaloosa Area Equipment Maintenance Manager oversees supplies to ensure employees have everything necessary to do their jobs, whether that’s vehicles, office supplies, construction materials or safety gear. Long said he thinks of his department as the glue for the employees doing the work and the materials they need to complete that work.
Long manages 358 fleet assets across 12 offices and stays busy given the continuous flow of materials in and out of warehouses.
“We’re the support service for our employees,” Long said. “They have a much better chance at being successful if we can provide what they need and can keep things maintained.”
Long, who has spent nearly 13 years at ALDOT, transitioned into the role after 12 years in corporate automotive and fleet management. He left the private sector due to a lack of stability, long hours and constant travel. He wanted a better work-life balance and to grow his family and coach his son’s sports teams. Long spoke to his sister about a potential change and she recommended transitioning to a position in government where the retirement, benefits and stability were appealing.
“There’s always a stigma around government and government employees but ALDOT employees work very hard to get everyone what they need and taxpayers the roads they deserve,” Long said.
Long’s responsibilities also extend to ensuring safety and compliance. He monitors audits to keep facilities, warehouses and vehicles up to code, all while ensuring employees stay safe on the road.
“I enjoy what I do because I know we make a difference,” Long said. “If we do our job properly, it helps everyone else stay on track.”
