National Construction Appreciation Week 2024
If you drive on any of Alabama’s approximately 11,000 miles of road, you’ve seen a transportation construction worker in a reflective vest and a hard hat in their office. These men and women are hard at work building the foundations of roads and bridges that will carry thousands of vehicles each day. This week, from September 16-20, we pause to recognize their contributions during National Construction Appreciation Week.
These men and women are the backbone of Alabama’s transportation network. In 2023, the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) managed more than 1,200 active construction projects, investing over $1.5 billion to improve Alabama’s infrastructure. The work they do every day is much more than asphalt and concrete – they are creating safer and more reliable roads for everyone traveling in the state.
Navigating through active construction zones can be dangerous. When a road is not in its usual condition due to construction, it is essential to slow down. According to 2022 Crash Fact data, most work zone crashes are rear-end collisions, resulting from speeding or inattentive driving. In 2022, there were over 1,000 crashes in work zones.
Construction workers are on the front lines. It is a risky job, but you can help make it safer. Here are some tips while driving through work zones
- Slow down – Reduced speed limits are in place to protect workers and allow you to react to changing conditions.
- Stay focused – Distracted driving is dangerous anywhere, but it can be deadly in work zones. Put your phone down and keep your eyes on the road. It’s the law.
- Follow directions – Whether it’s a flagger or a warning sign, pay close attention to all instructions in active construction zones.
As we recognize Construction Appreciation Week, let’s honor these workers by keeping them safe. The next time you drive through a work zone please remember that safe driving helps ensure everyone gets home safely.
