On October 17 at 10 a.m., the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) will begin a significant infrastructure project aimed at reconstructing and expanding a critical segment of I-59 in Jefferson County from the I-459 Interchange in Birmingham to Chalkville Mountain Road in Trussville, Alabama.
This extensive project begins at I-459 near Edwards Lake Road and ends north of CR-10, with an overall distance of approximately 4 miles.
The primary goal of the I-59 Trussville Project is to address the deteriorating condition of the roadway. The project will simultaneously be increasing its capacity to accommodate modern traffic demands.
With the roadway originally constructed and opened to traffic in the mid-1970s, the aging infrastructure has reached a point where a comprehensive overhaul is necessary.
The project involves the complete removal and replacement of the existing roadway pavement. Both northbound and southbound lanes are being reconstructed and expanded to incorporate an additional lane in each direction.
The new configuration will transform the current four-lane roadway into a six-lane thoroughfare. Each lane will measure 12 feet in width and complemented by 12-foot shoulders. Notably, this expansion will occur with the existing median, ensuring that no additional right-of-way is required.
Wiregrass Construction was the low bidder on this project with a bid of $70,377,212.
ALDOT’s mission is to provide a safe, efficient, environmentally sound transportation network across Alabama. For further information, visit www.dot.state.al.us.
