At the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT), we’re here to help with questions about state highways, road projects, and more. However, some road-related issues fall outside our responsibility.

To help you find the right answers fast, here’s a guide to who handles common road-related questions.

Road repairs and construction

ALDOT is responsible for building and maintaining Alabama’s state highways, including interstates, freeways, US routes, and state routes.

  • Questions about construction projects on state highways? Contact ALDOT. We’ll do our best to answer your questions or direct you to the appropriate project team. You can also find project information on our website.
  • Repairs or roadwork on city or county roads? Contact the local government (city or county) responsible for that road.

Traffic Conditions

If you have questions about current driving conditions and the best route to take, check out ALGOtraffic.com or the ALGO Traffic app.

Debris

If there is small debris on the highway or something on the shoulder and outside of travel lanes, contact ALDOT. However, if you see large debris or a hazard on the road that could cause a crash, such as a couch or ladder, that is an emergency and you should call 911.

Lights and Signals

If a traffic signal or light on a state highway or interstate is out or malfunctioning, it’s usually ALDOT’s responsibility.

However, while many interstate on- and off-ramp traffic lights are maintained by ALDOT, some may be managed by the local city or county.

We understand this can be confusing. Don’t worry if you contact the wrong agency. We’ll do our best to direct you to the correct one.

Crash Information

When highway crashes occur, ALDOT provides information on location, lane restrictions/closures, travel delays, and alternate routes through ALGOTraffic.com. For specific information related to a crash investigation, you would need to reach out to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency or local law enforcement, which responds to and investigates crashes.
