The Alabama’s Department of Transportation’s (ALDOT) Southwest Region has seen significant progress on several major infrastructure projects this year.
Key Projects & Initiatives
- Mobile River Bridge and Bayway
- Following a major federal grant, ALDOT is working with design-build teams to finalize plans for the new bridge and Bayway.
- The TIFIA loan process is advancing, paving the way for construction to begin in late 2025.
- Beach Express Toll Removal
- The successful removal of tolls on the Beach Express Bridge has significantly impacted traffic patterns, reducing congestion on Highway 59.
- Traffic on the Beach Express Bridge has increased significantly since the toll removal.
- Intracoastal Waterway Bridge and SR-161 Connector
- Construction is progressing steadily on the new bridge and connector, with completion expected by summer 2026.
- West Alabama Corridor
- Design work continues on the four-lane highway from Thomasville to Tuscaloosa, with construction underway on the Linden Bypass.
- I-10 Expansion in Mobile County
- A major widening project on I-10 was completed enhancing safety as well as traffic flow for commuters.
- Tensaw River Bridge Replacement
- A $78.8 million project to replace the westbound span of the Tensaw River Bridge on US-90 is set to begin in 2025.
- Regional Traffic Operations Program (RTOP)
- Upgrades to traffic signal infrastructure were completed in Mobile which, as a result, enhanced safety and efficiency.
- Pavement Preservation
- Nearly 300 lane miles were resurfaced across the region, including significant projects in the Mobile and Grove Hill areas.
- ATRIP-II Program
- Over $7.9 million in ATRIP-II funding was received, supporting projects like traffic signal upgrades, intersection improvements, and access management.
These projects represent a significant investment in the Southwest Region’s transportation infrastructure, improving safety, enhancing connectivity as well as supporting economic growth.
