An Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT) resurfacing project to replace an aging section of I-59/20 near Fairfield began Sunday, Feb. 8.
The project will replace two miles of deteriorating asphalt between the Fairfield Boulevard and Valley Road bridges.
More than 60,000 vehicles pass through that section of interstate daily.

ALDOT will carry out the $1.5M job over the next several months.
ALDOT resurfacing work carried out in phases
The project requires multiple phases before the final layer of new asphalt goes down.
Crews must mill off the top aging asphalt layer, make concrete slab repairs, and seal four bridge decks before final paving begins.
Since the deck sealant requires consistent warm temperatures, motorists will likely not begin enjoying the new final driving surface until early summer.

Future I-59/20 widening
These improvements are a precursor to a larger future project.
The plan to widen this stretch of I-59/20 to three lanes in both directions is still in the design phase.
Motorists should expect nightly lane closures from 7:00 p.m. to 6:00 a.m. Sunday through Thursday nights during construction.
