An Alabama Department of Transportation project to modify the intersection of US-331 and Hobbie Road/Butler Mill Road in Montgomery County, begins Thursday, March 7, weather permitting.
The project will modify the intersection of US-331 and Hobbie Road/Butler Mill Road into a restricted crossing U-turn intersection (RCUT).
This intersection eliminates left turns from Hobbie Road and Butler Mill Road onto US-331. Instead, motorists intending to make a left onto US-331 from Hobbie Road or Butler Mill Road will first make a right onto US-331, make a U-turn approximately a quarter mile down the road and then travel on US-331 to make a right turn onto Hobbie Road or Butler Mill Road.
The intersection also eliminates through traffic to and from Hobbie Road and Butler Mill Road while left turns onto Hobbie Road or Butler Mill Road from US-331 will still be permitted.
RCUT intersections eliminate multiple conflict points which results in a significant reduction in serious injury and fatal crashes.
Lane closures are possible throughout the construction of the project, but they are not permitted from 7 a.m. to 8 a.m. or 4:30 p.m. to 6 p.m.
Motorists should plan accordingly for delays and be mindful of equipment and people in the work zone.
The $1.3 million project was awarded to Wiregrass Construction Company, Inc., out of Dothan, Ala., who had the lowest bid that met the project requirements. The project is expected to be completed by the end of summer 2024.
