Drivers will soon see improved safety and and traffic flow from a new interchange reconstruction project at the I-85 and US-29 interchange in Valley, Ala. The Alabama Department of Transportation project is located approximately a half mile south of the Alabama-Georgia state line, and is expected to open to normal traffic flow on May 20, 2024.
ALDOT is replacing the existing asphalt with nine inches of concrete pavement, which should be maintenance-free for several years to come.
In conjunction with reconstructing the ramp and mainline roadway of US-29, bridge barrier rail is now upgraded and fence protection has been added. Improved drainage will help move rainwater off of the road. New guardrail and guardrail end anchors have also been installed. Changes to the intersection alignment will give drivers a larger area to complete their turn, making it a safer intersection.
This is one of several concrete pavement intersections and ramp projects that ALDOT is completing around the state.
ALDOT developed the design plans for the project, and bids were submitted Nov. 3, 2023. Grout, Inc. was awarded the project, for the contract amount of $5,138,499.71.
Work began on the project Jan. 25, 2024, and is currently in in the final stage of concrete paving of the ramp. ALDOT anticipates that the intersection will open to normal traffic flow on May 20, 2024. All work activities are scheduled to be complete June 1, 2024.
