Motorists are now traveling toll-free on the Beach Express Bridge following the removal of the toll at noon on May 23.
ALDOT urges all drivers using the Beach Express Bridge to remain aware of reduced speed limits of 15 mph as they approach the plaza structure. With the Memorial Day holiday weekend in full swing, motorists should expect possible delays due to increased traffic volumes.
To manage the increased traffic, however, ALDOT’s traffic management team will be working extra hours throughout the holiday weekend, monitoring and adjusting traffic signals in the area. This effort is part of ALDOT’s commitment to ensuring a smooth transition and minimizing inconvenience to travelers.
Brian Aaron, ALDOT Assistant Southwest Region Engineer, said the transition to State ownership has gone smoothly.
“First, special thanks to our District and Area crews who helped with planning, and then executing the transition plan safely and without incident,” Aaron said. “Now that the toll has been removed, we anticipate improvements in traffic flow and accessibility that will benefit both residents and visitors. We encourage all drivers to be mindful of the reduced speed limits and to prioritize the safety of everyone on the road, especially during the busy Memorial Day holiday period. We appreciate everyone’s patience as we work toward achieving a more free-flowing highway in the coming weeks in this area.”
By eliminating the toll, ALDOT aims to relieve congestion on Highway 59, improve traffic flow and support local economic activity, making the route more accessible for both residents and visitors.
ALDOT extends its gratitude to local commuters and visitors for their patience and cooperation during this transition period. The existing toll plaza will soon be demolished and removed, further enhancing the driving experience on the Beach Express Bridge.
